Tofa'ah: Women & Miracles

Image
Where do I even begin to tell you all about a phenomenal band whose members are phenomenal women; that the band was founded by one super phenomenal woman named Yona who is raising two incredibly miraculous  and phenomenal young boys? Why do I keep repeating the word phenomenal , you ask? The word  tofa'ah is the hebrew word for phenomenon. Tofa'ah is the name of the band! Tofa'ah, the world's first Jewish women rock band, keeps blazing trails. The unifying purpose, high level of musicianship and the sound of Tofaah remain unique in the world of Jewish music. Tofa'ah  was founded by drummer/percussionist  Yona Yakobovitz  "as a vehicle to inspire women to raise their voice in praise". She had been studying Judaism at a seminary in Jerusalem and playing music with another friend in hospitals, nursing homes when she was asked to par

Thursday Afternoon: Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem

Image
There is always something interesting and amazing to do in Israel - especially in Jerusalem. My friends and I took in the Bible Lands Museum  on a Thursday afternoon (entrance happened to be free that day!). The museum is located right next to the Israel Museum and the Shrine of the Book that houses the Dead Sea Scrolls . If you're an avid museum goer than you will want to spend the entire day to visit all three. My friends and I decided to take our time visiting just this one. The website states: "It is the only museum of its kind in the world, where the civilizations of the Ancient Near East are brought to life from the dawn of civilization to the early Christian era." The museum is set up with numbered rooms or gallery sections that move you from the earliest civilizations from hunters to city dwellers. It's a fascinating journey through history. You are invited to witness and experience the evolution of the civilizations of man. We see and learn how man

Thoughts from the Garden

Image
I'm sitting in my good friend's beautiful garden in Ma'aleh Adumim , the first town founded after the Yom Kippur War. It sits east of Jerusalem on the road towards Jericho and the Dead Sea. It was launched in 1975 and established in 1979. Ma'aleh Adumim is described as a border area between the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. The name refers to the route leading from the Jordan Valley to Jerusalem, dominated by "reddish hues" in its rock formations. Ma'ale Adumim is located seven kilometers (4.5 miles) east of Jerusalem. This is geographically significant in that it makes Ma'ale Adumim a central location linking the Jordan Valley and Judean Desert to the nation capital, Jerusalem. Historically, foreign powers ruling the area - from the Romans to the Jordanians - attempted to secure this route and considered Ma'ale Adumim strategically crucial to the defense of Jerusalem. I think the view from this garden is the best view of Jerusalem from Ma

Pioneering in a New Age!

Sustainability    The dictionary offers this definition:    Environmental Science. The quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance. Wikipedia explains further:    In ecology , sustainability (from sustain and ability) is the property of biological systems to remain diverse and productive indefinitely. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. In more general terms, sustainability is the endurance of systems and processes. The organizing principle for sustainability is sustainable development , which includes the four interconnected domains: ecology, economics, politics and culture.    Sustainability can also be defined as a socio-ecological process characterized by the pursuit of a common ideal. An ideal is by definition unattainable in a given time and space. However, by persistently and dynamically approaching it, the process results i
